In February 2013 I was an artist-in-residence at 3331 Arts Chiyoda in Tokyo, Japan. The work I started there was inspired by the rich visual imagery of the city, as well as the surprising amount of human isolation in such a densely-packed space. At the time I couldn't read any kanji, katakana, or hiragana, and the experience of being illiterate also influenced the images I produced. I hope to return to Tokyo soon (this time being able to read some Japanese) to develop this body of work further.
